Matter of Taste The University of North Carolina had a cool celebration for their 1957 and 1982 national title basketball teams. The greats from the past were back in Chapel Hill over the weekend to reminisce and rekindle memories of yesteryear. Pete Brennan led the way for the undefeated '57 team, and the '82 team was headlined by Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Sam Perkins and the great Dean Smith. It was a nostalgic day in the Smith Center as Roy Williams' Heels took a back seat to the halftime festivities. In case anybody noticed, UNC beat Wake Forest by 37 points. I think the '82 team could still beat the 2007 Deacons...and it's possible that the '57 team loaded with blue-hairs would have caused problems for Skip Prosser, too. I didn't care much for watching the inevitable blowout, but I got a kick out of the halftime pageantry. Less than two weeks ago, N.C. State upset North Carolina in Raleigh. In that game on Tobacco Road, Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe appeared in an electric red blazer as he embraced the rivalry between the two arch rivals. As Pack fans celebrated after the big win, it was UNC fans that called into my radio show heckling the red hot blazer worn by Lowe. It was a way to deflect the outcome and still mock their rival in Raleigh. It's all part of the back-and-forth between two fan bases that absolutely hate one another. Now, back to the Smith Center. When the UNC stars of the past were introduced to the roaring packed house, I was waiting on Michael Jordan and Dean Smith. And then, there was the introduction of the one and only Michael Jordan...... Oh, my God....sorry, Dean; I wasn't talking about you. Quickly I searched for the vertical and horizontal dials on my remote. Michael Jordan was wearing what appeared to be the latest version of a "2007 Leisure Suit".....I can't put into words what he was wearing. It is quite obvious that Michael Jordan has put too much of his own money into the Charlotte Bobcats...for crying out loud, he can't even afford a decent suit. I wanna be like Mike....unless I have to wear that get-up. Even Prince would have passed on that one. I can only imagine what the Wolfpack fans (and everyone else) will say when they call into the show this week. Jordan has always had a sense of style about him, but unfortunately, he looked like he lost a bet on Saturday. It looks like tough times for Bobby Knight and his protege Mike Krzyzewski. The two all-time great coaches find themselves in the midst of record losing streaks. The General lost his fifth straight game when his Red Raiders lost in double overtime at Oklahoma State. This is the longest losing streak for Knight since the 1971-72 season. For Coach K, his Blue Devils were smacked around for the fourth consecutive time when they lost Sunday in College Park. Krzyzewski hasn't experienced this much pain since the 1996 year when his team and his back gave out. It should be noted that the Blue Devils are now 5-6 in league play, and their next game is on the road against Boston College. The Eagles sit atop the ACC standings with a 9-2 mark. I still think Duke is getting into the NCAA Tournament, unless they fall completely apart down the stretch in the regular season. The Blue Devils still have road trips to BC, Clemson and North Carolina. But for argument's sake, let's say Duke rolls over and plays dead and misses out on an NCAA Tournament bid. I wonder if Duke and Coach K would accept a bid to the NIT? If you are struggling with your job and you're thinking that you are heading in the wrong direction from a career standpoint, let me lend you some advice and encouragement. Just when you think you've hit rock bottom, let me give you the example of Peter Vaas. You've never heard of Peter Vaas? For the past two seasons, Vaas has been the Quarterbacks Coach at Notre Dame. He has led the development of Brady Quinn. We all know that Quinn had a stellar career in South Bend (despite the Heisman over-hype) and will be a first round selection in the NFL Draft, and Vaas was on hand to share in the glory. This week, Vaas was announced as the new passing game coordinator for Duke. How do you go from coaching at Notre Dame to ending up at Duke? So, just when you think you've found yourself in a dead end job, it could be worse...you could be Peter Vaas. One more thing: as if you needed the reminder, the biggest anti-male day of the year arrives on Wednesday. It's Valentine's Day....remember, it could be worse....you could be Peter Vaas. |
