Already
in Regular-Season Form It didn't take long for Barry Bonds to enter the spotlight...and he hasn't even reported to camp yet. On Sunday, Bonds was quoted as saying that the 2006 baseball season will be his last one...at this pace we can only hope so, and I say that being a huge San Francisco Giants fan. Bonds said, "Baseball is a fun sport, but I'm not having fun." Well then, Barry....just walk away. You've got all the fame and fortune, and if your body isn't up-to-speed for another grind of a Major League Baseball season, then walk away. It is as simple as that. Why all the dramatics? I'll tell you why...you love the game and you love the fact that the media will respond to your every word. As much as Bonds says he despises the media and the "negative" attention that is directed his way...the guy feasts on the negative energy, too. Barry Bonds is an incredible player...one of the best of all-time. That is not up for debate...but the enigma that is Bonds is what is casting an ugly light over his brilliant career. Bonds enters the 2006 season just 6 home runs shy of Babe Ruth's legendary mark, and only 47 from the all-time record held by Hank Aaron. He'll catch Ruth, and might even reach Hammerin' Hank's total...but it really doesn't matter to Bonds....at least that's what he tells his friends and the media. Unfortunately, most baseball fans don't care if he reaches those levels, either. Barry Bonds might be the most disliked athlete on the planet...and that's too bad. He has brought much of the wrath from the public and baseball fans on himself. Bonds said, "I can't even tell you how many pain pills I am on or how many sleeping pills I'm taking." Hey, Barry...nobody cares. Bonds also said, "I'm not mad at anybody..it's just right now that I am not proud to be a baseball player." Barry...you are in the final year of 5-year contract that pays you 90 million bucks. If you don't like making 18 million dollars a year to play a sport and having to be drug-free in collecting a check...then walk away. I speak on behalf of all baseball fans...we're tired of the charades...and one more thing...Go Giants! |
