Spring
Fling The vast majority of colleges have finished up their Spring practices and games, and now we've got four months to wait until we kick-off the football season. Yuck. When you consider that we might have to put off the NFL season for a period of time, it makes the college game even more important. Even though I think the greedy players and owners will come to their senses and get a deal done....eventually. But if those two sides decided to play dumb and remain hard-headed, I'm still a Saturday guy more than a Sunday guy....I can't wait until the college football season gets started. But in the meantime, I'll follow my World Champion San Francisco Giants.....even though they are beat-up and having a tough time catching the baseball in the first couple of weeks of the season. Throw in the red-hot start of Colorado, and they have their hands, err....gloves full, already. I would be more interested in the NBA Playoffs if the Bobcats were participating, but we all know the story there. Despite MJ's plea that he isn't cheap, the opening round of the post-season has given us some shockers. But it is a Best-of-7 opening round series, and the best teams can afford a slip up or two.....I still can't imagine San Antonio and LA, the West's top 2 seeds, being eliminated in the opening round. I would be more interested in the NHL Playoffs if the Hurricanes were playing, but we know that story, too. Hey, there's always NASCAR.....we can watch to see if Dale, Jr. will ever win a race again. The winless streak is now up to 101 races, even though he played a huge role in pushing teammate Jimmie Johnson to a victory at Talledega. While Johnson received the win, the points and the accolades....Junior was able to walk off with the checkered flag. Thanks, Jimmie. I can see the T-shirt from here......"I visited Talladega and all I got was this checkered flag" What's funny is that Junior is now in 3rd place in the Cup standings.....not bad, for not winning a race and having a pair of top 5 finishes this year. I happened to see that Steve Spurrier received an $800,000 pay raise at South Carolina. He's worth every penny....and his Gamecocks will probably be the favorite in the SEC East again this year. The Ball Coach is now the 8th SEC football coach to be paid over $2.5 million per year......8 of the 12 SEC football coaches are bringing home that kind of coin. I finally saw the Nick Saban statue that was unveiled in Tuscaloosa this weekend. No wonder why Saban didn't want to comment on it. I know Auburn fans are still pissed, and rightfully so, about the Bama moron that poisoned their trees at Toomer's Corner.....but if I were an Auburn fan, I'd make sure that they didn't do anything to the Saban artwork. Surely, the creator of the statue has to be an Auburn fan. ESPN is considering a 30-minute show along the lines of "Hard Knocks", that follows a college football team. So, who wold be the right team for this reality special? The Miami Hurricanes' new coach, Al Golden, wants the gig. He believes it would be great exposure for his program. Be careful what you wish for, Al. He better be more concerned with winning some games, as opposed to the ubiquitous ESPN TV cameras in the Hurricane lockerroom. I hosted the Sirius/XM College Football Pregame Show on Saturday with former Buckeye great, Eddie George. He was great to work with and he told a funny story about one of the game's greatest coaches. I asked him about his recruitment, and he mentioned that it came down to Ohio State, Penn State and Virginia. I mentioned Joe Paterno, and he told me that Joe Pa never visited him at home. But instead the 6'3, 218 pound high school star attended a PSU game and walked in the lockerroom afterwards....it was there that Joe Pa laid eyes on him and declared that Eddie would make a great linebacker for the Nittany Lions. Eddie George signed with Ohio State and proceeded to win the Heisman Trophy. It was a great story. |
