Watch
it, Old Man Richard Childress is pissed, and he might whip your ass. The 65-year-old car owner evidently got down and dirty with that brash Kyle Busch. NASCAR has had some classic confrontations, but wouldn't you love to see a rematch on pay-per-view? The racing is completely a snoozer....another fuel mileage race this weekend in Kansas, and another week without Dale, Jr. in Victory Lane. But, who cares?....Everybody is still buzzing about Childress taking off the jewelry, putting down another glass of his fine wine and wanting to get a piece of Kyle Busch in the pits. NASCAR is missing the boat. The races have been so boring, but the fights and potential match-ups have people talking. Brad Keselowski won on Sunday.....slow-clap. Childress wants to see if you can take a punch......love it. I'm sure there will probably be another "double-secret probation" call from NASCAR, but Helton & France need to call Vince McMahon ASAP. Brian Sabean, the GM of the World Champion San Francisco Giants, screwed up this past week, when he called out the Marlins and Scott Cousins. Listen, every Giants fan is sick about the loss of Buster Posey in that home plate collision, and there's nothing wrong in keeping it fresh in the memory bank when the two teams hook-up again in August. But as Posey said this week...."it's time to move on". The kid is right....and Sabean needs to take note. What is equally disturbing is that Scott Cousins is receiving death threats for his play against Posey. That's ridiculous. We've already seen enough nonsense in baseball, highlighted by the thugs and the attack of a fan at Dodger Stadium this year....the death threats are completely insane. Cousins has apologized ten-fold.....Posey is ready to move on.....everyone else needs to understand that injuries are a part of sport. It's a shame to see a great, young player get hurt and be lost for the season...but it happens in every sport....all the time. The Giants, players and front office, need to figure out a way to get everyone healthy and continue to win every close game imaginable. You can't replace Posey in 2011....but you can get a piece of the Fish in August....and hopefully, a chance to defend the belt in October. Without Posey it will be very, very difficult to accomplish that last goal....but everything else is obtainable. I thought Steve Spurrier's idea to pay each player 300 bucks a game was interesting. According to the Old Ball Coach, it would probably cost each coach around 21K per game....and it's the least they could do, since the head coaches are all making a nice piece of change. The problem with Spurrier's idea is that it makes sense....and it's against the NCAA rules. I guess it goes without saying that if it makes sense, then it probably does violate a NCAA guideline. What the Old Ball Coach forgot was that Title IX, and if we're going to give something to the revenue-generating sport of football, then everyone gets paid....including the women's volleyball team. Eventually, people are going to come to their senses and realize that big-time college sports have nothing to do with amateur athletics. People who profess that these are all amateur athletes that are looking for "an education first, then athletics" are fooling themselves. SEC football is as close to a semi-pro league as you can get. Great coaches, incredible facilities, amazing fans and awesome players....you name it. If I asked the NFL to create a development league, it would look, feel and act like SEC football.....and you can include the Tressel Era at Ohio State, too. I loved Spurrier's idea....it's just a shame, that it involved common sense. I love the NCAA Baseball Tournament. I'm amazed how little airtime it receives during regional play, but at least the women's softball tournament gets televised. Geez....give me a break. One of the most amazing stats in sports surrounds the tournament and the ACC's inability to win the title in Omaha. 1955 is the last time the conference won the belt.....thanks to Wake Forest. It's hard to believe with all the terrific players and teams the league has produced, that it is 55 years and counting since the last time an ACC team accomplished the goal of winning the NCAA championship in baseball. The Gamecocks are the defending champs, and Ray Tanner's guys are in the hunt to go back-to-back.....but the SEC has had no trouble turning Omaha into Party Central. The question is if the ACC can finally turn the trick. When you consider that the top 6 national seeds are all from the ACC and SEC, there is no excuse for the conference to fall short this year. But we've been saying that now for a long, long time. Virginia, UNC and Florida State are rated as the 1st, 3rd and 5th top-seeded teams in the field of 64...... The time is now, for the ACC in baseball. |
