OM-AHA Greetings from the College Wold Series. It doesn't seem to matter if you are a national seed since #1 North Carolina, #3 Oregon State and #4 LSU all lost their opening games of the CWS. Those squads are the only national seeds that made it to Omaha, and now they are just trying to survive. On Tuesday afternoon, #1 UNC plays #4 LSU in a loser-leave-town match. It's just a reminder that "it's baseball", and the fact that there are a bunch of teams that can play college baseball. The two funniest items from the trip included a Mississippi State "Rebels" CWS T-shirt that sold out instantly. As you know, the school's nickname is "Bulldogs" and the Rebels moniker is associated with their bitter in-state rival, Ole Miss. Despite that mistake, it paled in comparison to the NCAA's all-time classic screw-up that was free of charge. Over the top of the 3rd base dugout, the word "college" was misspelled in the College World Series graphics. For an organization that claims to care about the development of academic achievement, spelling the word "college" would seem to be a prerequisite. For the record, it was spelled, "C-O-L-L-L-E-G-E". Last time I checked their weren't 3 L's in college. What else is interesting is that after the first two full days of the tourney, every team that used the 3rd base dugout has lost....beware of the extra "L's". I'll say it again, if you ever have the chance to make it to Omaha, you need to make the trip to the College World Series.....it is absolutely fantastic. It looked like old Merion Golf Club was the big winner during the US Open. For all the question marks about how an old-school, old fashioned golf course could hold up to the modern day golf technology, well we found out the answer. The winning score was 1-over par. The other big story was that Phil Mickelson found a way to finish in second place at the US Open for a record 6th time. Justin Rose won his first major title, continuing the trend in majors for the past 5 years. It was the first time that an Englishman had won the US Open since Tony Jacklin closed the deal in 1970. There has been a ton of expectations on Rose, and it seemed like a matter of time until he found himself winning one of golf's premier events. Of course, we've said the same thing about Sergio Garcia and he has yet to win one. While Rose was trying to tame Merion for his major title, Tiger Woods was posting his worst score in a major since turing pro. Between the sloppy play and shaking of the wrist....there wasn't much to see with Woods' game at Merion. His winless streak in majors is now a full five years and he seems stuck at 14 major championships. The pressure will continue to build in his pursuit of Jack's record....Woods still has time, but he's not getting any younger and the new wave of great players continues to grow. The defending champion, Miami Heat, find themselves in a 3-2 hole to the Spurs as they head back home. The series has been intriguing with some of the game's biggest stars taking a backseat to some surprising players coming off the bench. The Heat command a reaction....some people love 'em, some can't stand them. The Spurs command respect due to their consistency and championships. But the biggest negative about the Spurs is that they are boring. I don't buy it.....they can play and they do it the right way. If the Spurs were in NASCAR, they would be Jimmie Johnson. Before everybody celebrates the demise of LeBron & Co., I will just remind you that if you are going to beat the defending champs in their house, then you better cut off their head. It won't be easy for San Antonio in South Beach. Are they capable of pulling it off in Miami? The answer is yes....but I expect the Heat to be a tough out this week at home. One month from today, I'll be in Hoover, Alabama for the SEC Media Days. That's when it will feel like the college football season is upon us. The scene at the SEC is insane....big-time coaches, players, media and hoopla. It is a perfect three-day storm. As of this post, we are 73 days away from the kick-off of the college football season. When UNC's Larry Fedora unexpectedly stopped by our SiriusXM broadcast booth in Omaha, he talked about all kinds of things including the Heels/Wolfpack baseball game in the CWS which was hours away...he also reminded us that it was 134 days until the UNC-NC State football game. Yep...we all have an eye on the countdown clock for the 2013 college football season. Due to the CWS games on SiriusXM during the afternoons this week......I will be broadcasting my show in the 9am-Noon slot. |
