Head
of the Class I just finished up watching highlights of the Hall of Fame speeches from Canton, Ohio. The only thing that I came away with from witnessing the proceedings is that Deion Sanders' bust needs a re-make. When he unveiled the bust, I had no idea who that was, under cover. In fact, I don't think Deion even knew who it was. I think he tied his trademark bandana on it just to cover up the awful attempt of reproducing that Neon Deion noggin. You can never tell when it comes to statues.....sometimes they look OK; sometimes they turn into Nick Saban. If you happened to catch the statue that was recently unveiled outside Bryant-Denny Stadium of the head coach of the Tide, you'd know what I'm talking about. It was scary. In fact, I'm surprised that the in-state moron Harry Updyke, Jr. didn't try poisoning the statue, too.....and he's a Bama fan. Anybody dumb enough to attempt to kill trees of the arch-rival is dumb enough to do the same to a statue. Back to Deion..... I thought the speeches were OK....but the fact that "Primetime" decided to promote Under Armour by wearing a decal of the company's logo on his Hall of Fame blazer was beyond tacky. Don't get me wrong; I'm all about capitalism and maximizing the almighty buck....but there are times in life where it's not about the cash. This was one of those times. Maybe Deion can fork over some cash to the artist and have them re-do his bust....but this time, make sure the Under Armour logo is displayed prominently. Otherwise, we might not have a clue who that guy is in the Hall of Fame. Despite the fumbled attempt....one thing is certain: Deion Sanders was one of the greatest players that I've ever seen play in person.....and that's true, whether he was wearing a Florida State jersey or any of the multiple NFL colors he displayed during his brilliant career. I guess Steve Williams got the last laugh. By virtue of Adam Scott's impressive win at Firestone over the weekend, caddy Steve Williams must feel like he's on top of the world. Not only did his new employer beat his old employer by 18 shots...but the looper stirred the pot afterwards by declaring it was his best win as a caddy during his 33 years looping. Thats a pretty strong statement, since he was part of 13 major championships won by Tiger, not to mention how many prominent tournaments worldwide. I was already tired of the Williams-Woods story by the end of last week, but the caddy's comments on Sunday opened up a whole new ballgame. It is rather apparent that the ending with Woods didn't go over too well, based on his comments on the 18th green at Firestone on Sunday. I'm sure this won't be the last we hear about it, either.... This week, the final major championship of the year takes place at the Atlanta Athletic Club. I'll give you a scary tidbit.....30 years ago this week, at the Atlanta Athletic Club, I caddied in the PGA Championship for Tim Collins, a club pro from Bermuda Run Country Club. I remember it like it was yesterday. Time flies when you're having fun....just ask Steve Williams. I appreciated all the calls from all over the country on the SiriusXM radio show, this past Saturday. For the last couple of weeks I've been hosting "College Sports Saturday" from 12-3 on SiriusXM 91. I can't tell you how much fun it is to stir the pot with college football fans all over the country....and we still have three weeks until we really get cranked up. I'll have an announcement about Southern Fried Football™ and the latest radio gig coming up in about a week....so hang tight. The college football pre-season poll was released....and it is ridiculous. Not that Oklahoma is number 1, but the fact that such a huge percentage of the BCS is determined by rankings and we've got to use this criteria as a measuring stick in August. I've said it for years....the first college football poll should be released in the first week of October. In the past three years, I figured out that in the AP pre-season college football poll's Top 10 teams, we've had 3 teams in '10 (Florida, Texas, Iowa); 2 teams in '09 (Oklahoma and Oklahoma State); and 3 more teams in '08 (LSU, Clemson and Auburn) that didn't even finish ranked at all, by the end of the year. That's pathetic. That means 8 of the 30 teams ranked in the Pre-season Top 10 since 2008 never sniffed the Top 25, by year's end. Only 16 of the 30 teams ranked in the pre-season Top 10 actually finished there by year's end. It goes to show you how ridiculous the pre-season poll is in college football. I have a ton of stats and figures about the argument and presented them on the show..... I'm just ready for the season to get cranked up. After watching the Phillies dismantle my San Francisco Giants in the big showdown series by the Bay over the weekend, is there any question who the team to beat is in the National League? The only upside to the slaughter is that the playoffs don't begin for another two months....and surely the Phils will cool off a little bit, by then. I can assure you that the rest of the National League contenders are thinking the same thing. While Philly has eliminated the race in the East, the braves are still battling for the Wild Card, and the races in the Central and West are too close to call....the baseball races should be tremendous down the stretch, but the biggest problem for baseball is that football is ready to take center stage. So, let me get this right..... Butch Davis was not found to commit any violations according to the NCAA infractions report, but yet was fired by the Chancellor. But Chancellor Holden Thorp committed a NCAA violation by discussing the recruitment of Butch Davis' son to North Carolina. There's irony in that, somewhere. How does this guy still have a job at the institution, while both the football coach and athletic director have been told to hit the street? UNC has become a great source of comic relief. |
