Weekend Recap

I've got some thoughts from this past weekend...

Have you ever seen a better collection of high-drama college football games? It was truly remarkable. Everybody will talk (and rightfully so) about the great Southern Cal-Notre Dame game. It lived up to the pregame hype and became an instant classic.

But there were so many great games and endings on Saturday, that I don't know where to start. The Big Ten was loaded with improbable endings and comebacks.....Michigan saved their season by scoring with one second remaining and knocked Penn State from the unbeatens....Wisconsin's blocked punt for a TD with under :30 seconds gave them an incredible win against Minnesota.

The couches are still burning in Morgantown. West By-God-Virginia rallied from a 24-7 deficit in the second half to shock Louisville in triple overtime, and some guy by the name of Steve Slaton scored 6 touchdowns after halftime for the Mountaineers.

The University of Virginia didn't need any cheap shots to upset #4 Florida State in Charlottesville. It was the first win against a Top 10 team for snobby Al Groh....."Mini-Mac", indeed.

Boston College had to come from nowhere to beat the suddenly stingy Switzerland (Wake Forest). The Deacs are really playing well with Cory Randolph back in the lineup at QB....and for the Eagles, they are now tied for the ACC's Coastal Division lead with FSU.

The SEC had some thrillers, too...Bama kicked a FG at the buzzer to beat Ole Miss...LSU closed with a flurry to edge Florida, 21-17.

Out West in the Pac-10, UCLA stayed undefeated by winning in OT at Washington State....#18 Cal lost late to Oregon State by 3.

You get the picture...the college football weekend was incredible.

The Panthers are 4-2. How?

I'm starting to get used to this team...they win the ugliest looking football games known to man. Against the pitiful Lions, the Panthers and Jake Delhomme decided to win over the locals by throwing four TD passes in the first half....two to his own teammates and two for the home-standing Lions.

The teams combined for 20 penalties, 8 turnovers, a pair of blocked FG attempts, shanked punts and assorted brain-farts....it was tough to watch...unless you have an acquired taste for Panthers football.

Dallas Cowboys' Keyshawn Johnson said this after the 'Boys win over the Giants: "We're entitled to have a bad game and still win, at least once".....Hey Keyshawn, that doesn't fly in Carolina! The Panthers seemingly play poor every week and win....and that's the bottom line. Win and get ready for the next one. For the Panthers, they have the week off until taking on the almighty Minnesota Vikings.

Rumor has it the Vikes are planning to stay on a houseboat on Lake Norman during their visit later this month.

By the way, speaking of the Panthers....I happened to catch some of the game on the radio this week. Just a suggestion to the Panther broadcast officials....when you run a promo of the Panthers on your network, maybe it is time to include Panther TD calls by the current play-by-play man, Mick Mixon...it seems strange and unprofessional to hear Bill Rosinski's voice still on Panther promos for 2005...especially since we've played 4 preseason games and 6 regular season games at this point.

Rosinski is (and was) a terrific play-by-play guy, but he is no longer "the voice" of the Panthers...He may claim to be the original "voice", and that's fine...its just that Bill isn't the "current" voice of the team....just a suggestion.

The Major League Baseball playoffs continue...I'm sure that the FOX TV officials are getting that cold, clammy feeling that the Sox and Astros are going to be the stars in the Fall Classic.

Humpy Wheeler and Bill Weber of NBC Sports stopped by during our live radio remote at Lowe's Motor Speedway last Thursday...I mentioned to both of them that I thought the over/under of cautions for the 500 mile race was going to be "15"....they laughed at me. There were 15 cautions on Saturday night. Despite the lucky guess, there is a serious issue that Humpy and Bruton Smith need to get the track back to conditions that the drivers can handle....it was bizarre on Friday and Saturday.
