Hail To The Chief

Be sure to vote on Tuesday...regardless of your political beliefs...get to the polls and place your vote. I like to say all the time....if you don't vote, you can't bitch.

It has been funny reading all the trends in determining the outcome of the election....

Since '84, every Presidential election, the winner of the Bama-LSU game has had a direct effect on who captures the White House. When Bama wins, a Democrat wins....when LSU grabs the victory, the GOP is headed to Pennsylvania Avenue.

Based on Bama's last-minute rally, that's good news for President Obama.

Then there is the "Redskin Rule"...which has been in effect since 1936....given the outcome on Sunday, a Redskins home loss before the election means Mitt Romney will win on Tuesday.

Who knows?

Just vote.

As for the sports world, I was touched this past week with all the support from players, coaches and announcers over the terrible injury to South Carolina's Marcus Lattimore.

Anybody that has come into contact with the kid has had nothing but great things to say about his attitude, demeanor and the way he handles himself with class. His injury against Tennessee was not for the weak-hearted.

I pray that he has a speedy recovery and has the chance to pursue all of his dreams. He represents everything that is good about college football.

When you couple Lattimore's injury with the devastation caused from Hurricane Sandy, it puts things into perspective pretty quickly. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone that was harmed by that terrible storm.

If you would like to help, you can call the American Red Cross at 1-800-HELP-NOW (that's 800-435-7669)...I know that they would appreciate any and all donations whether it's cash, clothes, you name it....every bit helps.

I think South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier lost his mind last week.

He had a series of blunders which caused the HBC to get ripped by national pundits all week.

His latest gaffe was during an interview with Dan Patrick in which he stated that the Alabama Crimson Tide could probably compete with the worst teams in the NFL.

In fact the direct quote is as follows:

"Alabama, gosh, they look like they could beat a couple of those NFL teams that I've watched on Sundays. I think a lot of the oddsmakers out there that usually know what's going on...I'd guess Bama would be favored by a little bit."

I love Spurrier on gamedays....the guy is a brilliant coach. But this time he looks like a complete fool.

Ironically, some of the vegas oddsmakers contended that the worst NFL team would probably be a 4 touchdown favorite over the 2012 Crimson Tide.

After watching Bama barely survive LSU, I guess Spurrier believes that LSU would give Kansas City, Jacksonville and Cleveland a run for their money?

Something tells me that Spurrier's visor is on a little too tight.

Or maybe he's trying to sell the fact that Bama is so superior to everyone in the college game, that anybody could coach them to a national title? I mean, this is the same Spurrier that was spinning earlier this year that anybody could win national titles at Bama, and if Nick Saban was going to be added to the great coaching list, he needs to prove that he can do it other than in Tuscaloosa.

Of course we already knew that Saban had captured a national title at LSU in addition to building a football power at Bama.

Spurrier should know better.

The NBA season is underway; it didn't take long for the Bobcats to grab my attention.

One game into the season, and the club has already made news....by virtue of a 1-point win over Indiana at home, the Bobcats snapped their 23-game losing streak which had been hanging over the franchise during the entire off-season.

The team rejoiced, and rightfully so....new coach, new players, new attitude...I was happy for the team and the city of Charlotte which has been tabbed as one of the worst pro sports towns in America, thanks to the ineptitude of their NBA and NFL franchises.

It didn't take long for the Bobcats to get back to their losing ways....the next night they were trounced at Dallas, without Dirk Nowitzki, as the Bobcats remain 0-for-life against the Mavs. Amazingly, Charlotte has never beaten Dallas....they'll get another chance at Mark Cuban's club later this month.

I also laughed at the LA Lakers' putrid start. Speaking of Mark Cuban, his club opened up in LA and the Mavs owner claimed, "I hope they suck".

You gotta love Mark Cuban....maybe he confused them with the Dodgers?

But back to the Bobcats, owner Michael Jordan claimed in an interview that he was "here for the long term". I'm not sure that was news-worthy. Where else is MJ going? If he wanted to get out of the deal, nobody is going to pay to own the club....they are a financial mess in a small market. Of course, MJ is here for the long haul...he doesn't have any options.

I just hope his team can play like they did on opening night.....it was entertaining and his guys played inspired ball. This team will still be awful in 2012-13....but as long as they are not described as being the worst team in NBA history, then that's a start in the right direction.
