Roy
Ain't PC Before we get started with another edition of "Ripe Gripe", I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. I have one more radio show (12/16 in Wilmington) and the daily TV commentaries (WJZY 10 o'clock news) before I call it quits in 2009. I don't know about you, but I'm ready to bring in a new year to the mix....2009 was a pain. Every time I worry about my problems, I think of Tiger.....you know, life really isn't that bad. I can tell you that I have agreed to terms on a new one-year contract with CBS Radio and WFNZ for 2010, so I'll be back with the daily radio gig on the PrimeTime Radio Network beginning on Monday, January 4th. Now, let's get to the latest installment of Ripe Gripe. I mentioned Tiger Woods earlier, and I'll get to his latest PR nightmare in a minute. But what in the world was Roy Williams doing the other night, at the Smith Center? It's bad enough that UNC fans have to fork down money to watch a glorified scrimmage against Presbyterian College; now, Ol' Roy is making them leave early. The UNC head coach is in the headlines for all the wrong reasons this week, but he certainly deserved them with his ridiculous actions on Saturday night. It was just last week that Williams was ripping his own fan base for not showing to watch his "young Tar Heels" in action. So what, if the Smith Center was half-empty at tip-off against Nevada? Surely, Coach Williams has been to a game across campus at the Aluminum Jungle. UNC basketball fans know when to show up....they know good basketball from over-priced scrimmages...and they know the next big game in Chapel Hill takes place in 2010, when the conference action heats up. But, back to Roy....he was so over the line....over the top....out of bounds...call it what you want, with his actions against PC, that it has been comical to watch the entire UNC PR Department work overtime in spin-control. The Presbyterian fan (Brian King) was accused of being drunk and disorderly by everyone that protects Roy Williams. Evidently, the guy had a beer and never used any vulgarity in wishing Deon Thompson to miss a free throw in the Heels' narrow 39-point win over the Blue Hose. Roy claims he didn't get the guy tossed from the Smith Center. Hey, Roy.....why bother? It was a foolish move, and one that caused a brief reprieve from the "Tiger Woods" saga. Roy only wants good things to be said about his team during home games.....I can only imagine what awaits him on the road, this winter. So, the Carolina Panthers are talking smack about Randy Moss and the Pats......after losing in Foxboro. It's bad enough to watch the Carolina Panthers play each Sunday. They have zero offensive creativity....they play the most boring brand of football in the NFL.....and they appear to be on the fast track to a forgettable 5-11 season. The only thing worse is talking trash after another losing performance. Apparently Chris Gamble and Chris Harris thought it was their job to question Randy Moss and his ability to mail it in during a game. Leave it to the Panthers, to break down quitting. Bill Belichick's reply to the Panthers' remarks was hilarious. He was dead on the money....."that's a lot of conversation, coming from a team that lost another game.....teams play and defend Moss because he's one of our best players... other than the two guys from Carolina, after they lost another game.....they haven't won a lot of games, now." Geez, Fox....can you keep your guys quiet, after another loss? It's bad enough to watch it....now we have to live through the ridicule, days after the fact. I can't wait to hear some of the remarks after Favre, AP and the Vikes come rolling into town for a primetime affair. How bad can it get for Tiger Woods? There's now a report surfacing that a Canadian doctor was arrested with PEDs and other "stuff" and he has a relationship with Tiger. Listen, I hate going to the doctor and dentist, and I have no idea what this doctor's deal is, with his theories and magical healing powers. I have no idea if Tiger is in deeper trouble, assuming that it is possible, given what has happened to him the past few weeks. But this I do know for a fact: The Florida Highway Patrol showed up at his mansion three days in a row to speak with Tiger, following his high-profile car crash. They never had the chance to meet with him, because Tiger wasn't available nor did he want to speak. The Canadian doctor had no problem meeting Tiger on four separate instances, earlier this year at his Florida home. You just don't show up at the Woods house and then ring the doorbell and get the Tiger treatment....unless you're a doctor from Canada that makes your healing process speed up. That's not good news for Tiger. I also found it interesting that Woods' fall from grace has been recorded by the Gallup Poll. He has a 52-point swing in the largest drop between consecutive measurements since Gallup has been tracking such items in 1992. Tiger's fallout matches President Bush's decline from 2001-08. |
