Marty's
Nightmare Marty Hurney is the kind of guy that will worry about the sun rising in the East tomorrow. No matter how favorable the odds, Hurney believes there's always a chance something will go wrong. Now the Carolina Panthers' General Manager has a real problem on his hands....it's called the 2006 NFL Preview magazines. To my knowledge there have been 5 of these so-called magazines released for public consumption, and every one of them has Panther Fever. Just take a look for yourself:
But it gets worse for Hurney...much worse. Marty Hurney's worst nightmare can be found on the pages that come after the NFC South previews....Fast forward the pages to the "Playoff Section". There is where you'll see the name CAROLINA PANTHERS printed all over the place. Panther fans in the Carolinas will soak up every word and get their reservations made for Miami in February.....not Hurney. This is the last thing the Panther braintrust wants to see, hear and read. All five national magazines have the Carolina Panthers making it to the Super Bowl.....every single one of them. Some of the mags have the Panthers winning, some losing...but everybody expects to see Carolina in the big game in February. The pressure to perform always exists in the NFL and in pro sports. Last year the Panthers were tabbed by Sports Illustrated to win the Super Bowl...they fell short in the NFC South and in the NFC Championship game. This year the Panthers get another chance to prove the media experts right. Will they be up for the challenge? On paper, it looks great. The schedule is challenging, but that is a given, too. If the team stays healthy they should have a terrific chance to prove the pundits right, and Hurney wrong. All I know is this, when the calendar turns to July, the football season gets that much closer. And until the boys are wearing pads and sweating in the summertime heat...the pre-season magazines are the best thing going. Sweet Dreams, Marty. |
